How we got started
The UPAGO story starts with the love of a father for his son. In 2014, David Francisco Platillero graduated from the University of Tennessee with an engineering degree. To celebrate, David’s dad, John, took him to where he grew up, in Spain, and they hiked a portion of the Camino de Santiago. On that journey, David decided that upon returning to America, he would pursue his true passion and calling, which was music. John and his mother Mitzi fully supported the move, and with their blessing, David moved to Nashville TN to study recording engineering.
3 weeks later, tragedy struck. David was riding his bicycle to school when a distracted driver ran a red light and t-boned him going over 30 mph. He was instantly paralyzed from the waist down. The next 2 years were a difficult journey, but one filled with courage, hope and love. During that journey, John set out to learn all he could about artist management, and helping his son get back to what he loved most, music.
As they organized various concerts, pricing for the shows was not obvious to John...so he thought, why not have a simple app that allows people to tell us what they would be willing to pay? We could then consider all of those “offers” and decide how many we could afford to accept!
John called Eli Harris, the son of a long-time friend, who was finishing his college degree in computer science; and Chris Kimball, a long-time friend who was a graphic designer. Together, they brainstormed and built version 1 of UPAGO.
During David’s rehab, many from the music industry surrounded David with their love and support. One of those was MusiCares, the Grammy’s non-profit foundation. Because of their example, we will encourage all of our clients to donate a portion of their proceeds to non-profit causes. In addition to that, we will donate 10% of company profits every year to MusiCares.
Our vision for UPAGO is that it bring more people together. With UPAGO, artists can attract new fans to their shows; mega fans can secure great tickets without having to buy through scalpers; VIP experiences can be properly valued while raising money for good causes…and everyone wins!
